Deep Green Websites

: We create, maintain, and certify Deep Green websites. For a website to be Deep Green, its hosting, display, printing, shopping, shipping, and development must be green. We also advertise for Deep Green computers and websites.

You can Help!

Helping where you can is appreciated, and you’ll be doing the earth a huge favor. Listed below are some suggestions of ways you can help.
1) Support Deep Green Certified Websites. These websites have incorporated deep green methods. When you visit them, they’ll use less energy than most other websites. When you print their pages, you’ll use less ink than when printing most other webpages. Their shopping and shipping incorporate green methods. Their webmasters incorporate green travel and home energy efficiency principals in their daily lives. Their website content is not eco-offensive, and in many cases it is Deep Green.
2) Upgrade to the latest version of your Web Browser. This gives you a better internet experience, and loads websites faster. Loading websites faster saves energy. Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Opera and Safari are recommended for Windows. Those browsers, plus Camino are recommended for Mac. Firefox, Chrome, and Opera are recommended for Linux. Opera Mini & Opera Mobile are recommended for phones, pdas, and other handheld devices.
3) Put your PC in Sleep Mode. Allow your PC to go to sleep or be turned off when not in use. This saves energy.
4) Dim Brightness. Making your screen not quite so bright will save energy and strain on your eyes. For computers with separate screens, the brightness control is usually at the bottom of the screen. For laptops, brightness controls may be on the keyboard. For a Dell Inspiron, hold down the Fn key while pressing the cursor keys. You may want to adjust both brightness and contrast. Alternatively (or in addition), you can change the background color to off-white – both of your operating system and of Word.
5) Print Green. Printing Green saves energy, trees, water, and petroleum. Reduce ink and paper when printing – print draft only copies if appropriate, use only black ink when appropriate, reduce margins, and double side if practical. Sometimes double-sided printing wastes paper because pages aren’t lined up correctly or don’t feed into printer correctly. Limit the number of pages you print. Consider using black ink only for printing. Try using GreenPrint for printing. GreenPrint allows you to choose which pages to print and whether or not to print images. You can reduce print margins (to save paper), by selecting File…Page Setup.
6) Reduce Wifi use. Wifi takes more energy than a wired connection. Turn off wifi when not in use. This is more easily accomplished on newer laptops. If you have a wifi router, consider changing the configuration option to reduce the wifi range. This is also a good security measure. Consult the help for your router for instructions on changing the configuration.
7) Lower Volume. Lower the volume on your PC. Keep the volume control handy, so you can mute when not in use. The volume control is typically in the system tray. This can get to be a little tedious if you listen to a lot of audio. Download Volumouse for free to control your PC volume with the mouse wheel. If you use external speakers, consider low energy ones which have a standby mode. These usually carry the EnergyStar logo.
You can turn off notification sounds in Windows, by clicking Start, then Control Panel. Then open Sounds, click on the Sound Tab and choose No Sounds for the Sound Scheme.
8) Carbon Offsets. Purchase Carbon Offsets to offset the energy you use surfing the web. Native Energy is recommended. Also, purchase Carbon Offsets to offset the energy used to ship something you buy off the web.
9) Disable tables when using a phone, pda, or other handheld device to view websites. Disabling tables will make many websites display better on your handheld device. Disabling tables can allow a website to load faster which will save energy. If using Opera Mini, this is found under User Mode or Author Mode. If using a different web browser this may or may not be possible.
